The Queen of Soul

Aretha Franklin, The Queen of Soul, was at the top for six decades. Her biggest hit was Respect, a cover of an Otis Redding song. It became the hymn for both the African-American civil rights movement and the second feminist wave.

She sang at the funeral of Reverend Martin Luther King and at the inaugurations of Presidents Carter, Clinton and Obama and was a source of inspiration for singers such as Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Annie Lennox.

Aretha died on August 16, 2018, at the age of 76.
